The Battle of Quebec
A countryâs destiny can change in a moment. The Battle of the Plains of Abraham lasted less than an hour, but in that short time, the future of the Americas was shifted. In this dramatic victory, British dominance in North America was sealed. French natives still lived in Canada, which is why the country still has a large French-speaking population today. The constant clashes between France and Britain heated up into a full-blown conflict.
In 1756, the Seven Yearsâ War (or the French and Indian War) commenced. The battles between Britain and France had now left the shores of Europe and were extending into one of the first global conflicts. The war was fought on multiple fronts, with European powers aligning to opposing sides of the conflict. The bulk of the fighting took place in Europe and in the Americas. The Battle of Quebec happened during the Seven Yearsâ War, but the arena was getting set before this.
In the early 1750s, France expanded the colony into the Ohio River valley. This position was close to Britain, so they regularly clashed. Even when there was still official peace between the British and French governments, troops were already being sent to fight in the Americas. When the war started in 1756, the French had the upper hand. Under the leadership of Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, Britain suffered many losses. Realizing the benefits of imperialism, British Prime Minister William Pitt went on a fundraising campaign to ensure Britainâs victory by borrowing all that he could. Britain had 13 colonies dispersed across North America. Their dispute with France was in the Isle of Orleans. The New France colony included Canadaâs great lakes and stretched to Louisiana and Mississippi.
Their ongoing frontier battles came to a crescendo at the Plains of Abraham. Although De Montcalm was riding high from his chain of victories, he was no match for the strategic genius of Wolfe. The major general sailed along the St. Lawrence River, docking in the southwest of Quebec. He then led 4,500 troops up the Heights of Abraham. They had the higher ground on the French army and fired down at them. Wolfe instructed his soldiers to double-load their muskets so that the volume could further disorient the French soldiers who were caught off guard.
Wolfe could not appreciate the swift victory because of the injuries he sustained and his death shortly after. He learned that he had won just before passing, allowing him to send a final letter to De Montcalm to negotiate terms of surrender. De Montcalm was injured as rifle fire ripped through his back. He died the next day, also attempting to establish communication with Wolfe.
France was devastated by the loss. Their military and imperial campaign in North America swiftly ended. Within a year, they lost all power in the region, and their influence in Europe was dwindling as well. The rebuilding process after the war took time, and they never endeavored to reclaim Canada from the British. Their assistance from America
